Representing cultural diversity in a massive environment. The role of EMMA in the MOOC environment
Rosanna de Rosa (University of Naples), Ruth Kerr (EMMA project)

Multilingual and cultural diversity skills are viewed as a communicative proficiency that is necessary for people to fully function in 21st century learning. The Emma Project is responding to this challenge through provision of an Automatic Transcription Translation System thanks to the expertise of the Universitat Politècnica of Valencia.

Bridging the need for multilingualism with the need for respecting cultural diversity in a digital platform, which, by its very nature, tends towards standardisation is very challenging. Participants in the workshop will be invited to explore how the concept of cultural diversity can be addressed in a MOOC platform.
